We have nothing against hot chocolate here on the Plant-Based Pilgrim, but reaching for it right before bed might actually be keeping you awake. Cocoa naturally contains small amounts of caffeine and theobromine—two central nervous system stimulants that can raise your heart rate and disrupt your natural sleep architecture, even if you fall asleep easily. When you want something warm, sweet, and comforting at night without the lingering stimulation, golden milk is the ultimate functional alternative.

Rooted in ancient Ayurvedic traditions, this vibrant golden drink relies on turmeric as its core ingredient. Turmeric is rich in curcumin, a potent anti-inflammatory compound that helps reduce joint stiffness, soothe systemic inflammation, and support healthy digestion overnight. Combined with warming spices, golden milk gently signals to your nervous system that it is time to unwind, offering a deeply nourishing ritual for late-night hunger.

How to make Golden Milk

Prep time: 2 min

Cook time: 3 min

Total time: 5 min

Serves: 1

Equipment

Small saucepan, milk frother or small whisk

Ingredients

250 ml og coconut milk, almond milk, or your favorite nut milk

½ to 1 tsp ofground turmeric (or measure with your heart)

1 small pinch of ground black pepper or piperine (essential: black pepper increases curcumin absorption by up to 2,000%)

¼ tsp of ground cinnamon or cardamom (optional, for flavor)

1 tsp of raw honey or maple syrup (optional, to sweeten)

Preparation

Step 1

Pour the plant milk into a small saucepan over low heat until warm. Do not let it boil.

Step 2

Add the turmeric, ground cinnamon (or cardamom), and a pinch of black pepper directly into the pan. Use a small whisk or handheld milk frother to blend thoroughly until smooth and frothy.

Step 3

Remove from heat. If using raw honey, wait a minute for the liquid to cool slightly before stirring it in to preserve its beneficial enzymes.

Step 4

Pour into your favorite mug, sprinkle an extra pinch of cinnamon on top, and sip warm before bed.
