Because ceremonial cacao is actual plant medicine, dose matters. It’s not a “more is better” situation—it’s just about finding what works for your body and your tolerance to theobromine.

    • Everyday use (10g – 25g): This is ideal for a morning routine, creative work, or cycle support. I personally take 20g to 25g melted into 250ml of warm water. It gives you steady, clear focus without making your heart race.
    • Ceremonial dose (Up to 42g): Keep this for actual rituals or deeper work. 42g is heavy—go beyond that and your stomach won't thank you. It also puts extra pressure on your adrenals, so definitely don't drink this amount daily.

How to make ceremonial cacao

Bring 250ml of water to a gentle simmer (don't boil it), drop the heat. Add your chopped cacao, and stir until it turns into a thick, smooth drink.

How to start with ceremonial cacao

Having cacao right after breakfast completely changed my mornings. My head feels clearer, I’m less reactive to random noise, and I actually feel motivated to get things done.

On evenings when I need to wind down, I make it as a cozy hot drink before bed. It takes the edge off the day, helps with insomnia, and lets me actually drop into deep sleep.

It won't force some huge emotional breakdown. It just lowers the volume of the day so you can catch your breath, process what you've been putting off, and get back to your own rhythm.

If you want to try it out, I highly recommend starting with Ritual Cacao’s Ecuadorian line. It's made from Arriba Nacional / Fino de Aroma beans, which makes it super approachable if you're new to this—it makes a rich, comforting drink that settles your system. A 500g block usually lasts about a month if you use it daily.

A quick safety heads-up

Since cacao naturally boosts serotonin and contains theobromine, keep these in mind:

    • Antidepressants / SSRIs: Cacao acts as a mild, natural mood lifter. If you're on a high dose of SSRIs, skip ceremonial cacao—mixing pharmaceutical and natural serotonin boosters can cause serotonin syndrome. On a low dose? Start small (around 10g) and see how you feel.
    • Heart issues, high blood pressure, or pregnancy: Treat cacao with the same awareness you’d give a strong espresso or black tea if you're sensitive to stimulants. If you ever get a headache or feel lightheaded, stop and check with your doctor.
